our current unit: Non-Fiction Book Clubs
In this unit students get to study a topic across several non-fiction texts. Then they get to meet with students who are studying the same topic to discuss and grow their knowledge even more. Some of our club topics include history, bugs, animals, and things that go.
Parents can help their students by asking them about their topic. I bet you will be surprised about how much they know! They are little experts. You could even take it a step further and allow them to do some further research on their topic using a kid-safe search engine, like http://www.safesearchkids.com/google/#.Vuy7n7whObg, or additional books on the topic. You can ask them questions and then have them show you "evidence from the text.

Our students read books on EPIC. It is an app that has LOTS of high interest books. This would be a great way to get your student reading at home!
